What reflective detailing actually does

Reflective detail on running apparel catching a light source in the dark

Reflective material does not glow. It does not make you visible in the dark. It returns light to whatever sent it — which means it only works when something is pointing at you, and only from roughly the direction that light came from. Stand in an unlit field in a fully reflective jacket and you are as invisible as you would be in black.

That sounds like a limitation. In practice it is exactly the right behaviour, because the thing you most need to be seen by is a car, and a car arrives with its headlights on. The system is tuned for the one scenario that actually hurts you.

Placement beats quantity

A large reflective panel across your back is less useful than smaller details spread across the shoulders, the cap, the cuffs and the ankles. The reason is motion. A static bright shape reads as a sign, a reflective post, a bin. A shape that rises and falls at a running cadence reads unmistakably as a human being, and it reads that way from much further out. Drivers do not consciously work this out — the recognition happens well before the thinking does, which is precisely why it buys you time.

This is why we put reflective trim on the parts of a garment that move the most, and why a reflective cap does a disproportionate amount of work — your head is the highest point on your body and the first thing to clear a parked car. It is also the part of you pointing at the driver when you are running towards them.

What reflectivity will not do

It will not help you on an unlit trail with no cars. It will not help a cyclist with no lights see you. And it does nothing at dusk, which is statistically the most dangerous time to be out — there is enough ambient light that drivers have not switched their headlights on, and not enough for you to stand out. For that hour, colour matters more than reflectivity. Reach for something bright.

If you run that window regularly, a small blinking light costs very little and solves the one problem reflective fabric genuinely cannot. Clip it where it moves, not where it sits still.

Almost everything we make carries reflective detailing — the full range is in All Visibility, and the pieces designed around it are in After Dark.
