Why we make so many colours

Group of runners in a range of brightly coloured kit

A reasonable question arrives fairly often: why does a running cap need to exist in fourteen colours? Black works. Grey works. Surely the rest is indulgence, or worse, a way of selling the same cap repeatedly.

Three answers, in ascending order of how much we believe them.

The practical one

Bright colour is a safety feature in the hour either side of sunset, which is when the most running happens and when drivers are least prepared for it. Reflective trim does nothing in that light — there are no headlights on yet. Colour is all you have, and a dark grey runner at dusk is close to invisible against wet tarmac.

The honest one

Kit you like wearing gets worn. This sounds trivial and is not. The gap between people who run consistently and people who do not is made of very small frictions, and reaching for something you are pleased to put on is a real, if slightly embarrassing, advantage over reaching for the practical black thing you feel neutral about. Nobody has ever skipped a run because of a cap, but plenty of us have gone out partly because of one.

The one about names

Our colours are called things like Glade, Shadowcast, Terrain, Peachskin and Clay, and we are aware this is not always helpful. Glade is a pale cream rather than anything green. Clay is a terracotta red. Silver Pine is a muted green. We name them after the things they came from rather than the category they sit in, which is lovely in a studio and occasionally maddening in a browser.

So we group them too. Filter by colour family and Glade will turn up under Beige where you would expect to find it, while the name on the label stays what it has always been. You get to shop by the colour you can picture and keep the name that means something.

The new season's colourways are in New Arrivals.
